Angel’s Song — Short Story Companion to The Thorn

Posted by: DaronFraley    in Short Stories

I now have permission from my publisher to post excerpts from The Thorn, but I am adding a companion short story first. You can find it here on my website under “READ“. It is called Angel’s Song. The short story introduces one of the minor characters who is in The Thorn, and is set in the mountains of Gideon. It gives another point of view of some events in the novel, and will greatly add to the general feeling of what the planet Gan is like when the book and story are read together.

I don’t think it will ruin anything for readers of the novel if the short story is read first (but I leave it to you to make your own decision). I would be curious to hear from anyone who cares to comment if they felt it was better to have read the story before the book, or after. Of course, no matter what choice you make, the very fact that you made the choice will prevent you from being truly open minded about the other choice which you did not make, and therefore your commentary will be entirely meaningless (I am terribly cruel, aren’t I). But, please, tell me what you think. Really.

Ah… this reminds me of the choice which Indiana Jones had to make in a room full of cups–each one possibly the real Holy Grail–knowing that if he didn’t pick the right one, certain death awaited him.

May the guardian knight say to you: “You have chosen wisely”.

Sorry for the side-trip there. Back to business:

This story was first written and submitted to the LDS Publisher Blog for the Christmas Story contest in November of 2008. It has changed a little and been properly edited since then, so I think the story is much stronger than the original version. I want to thank a few members of my writers critique group who read it and commented (Wendy, Paulette, Lydia, Janice, Jeff), and also my esteemed editor, Tristi Pinkston, for helping me to clean it up.

I hope you like it!

To read the story, click on READ (or above, on the menu bar of the website) and look for “Angel’s Song”.

And don’t forget to come back here to comment!

Newly Updated Website!

   Posted by: DaronFraley    in Miscellany

I have integrated my blog with my website, folks! The entire site runs on WordPress now, and has a few new features.

I am still trying to figure out how to have a “followers” box on the site, but have not been able to find such a widget for wordpress. If any of you have such an animal, let me know how you did it.

Spend a few minutes and explore, if you don’t mind. Let me know if you find broken links, typos, etc.

Thank you!

I considered giving away a netbook. I really did. After all, they have become quite affordable. I actually type my stories on an ASUS 1000-HE running Ubuntu Linux Netbook Remix, and it is awesome.

Then I thought about giving away an iPod. But everybody does that. It seemed much too generic.

After discussing my options with my publisher and peers at the training I went to last week, I have come up with something far better. My hat is off to BJ Rowley of Valor Publishing Group for getting me started on this exciting idea!

First of all, the prize…

Now, I realize there are quite a few fellow authors who will be reading/reviewing my book (several already have), so this prize might not excite them. If they, or any other contest winner would rather have a $25.00 gift certificate to Amazon.com so they can feed their book habit, I can make arrangements for one.

On to the real prize…

One lucky contest winner will get to collaborate with me, the author, on a character in the second book of my series “The Chronicles of Gan”. Currently, that book is called “Heaven’s Garden”. The winner will be able to help me choose:

1. The description of a new character in “Heaven’s Garden”. The physical description of the character could be similar to the contest winner, if the winner desires.

2. The tribe to which the character belongs. Read “The Thorn” and you will know what the three choices are. Or are there four? ;)

3. Whether the character is a “good guy” or a “bad guy”.

4. The occupation of the character, if any. What will they be? A potter? An astronomer? A miller? A horse-trainer? A soldier? A mother? A gardener? A shipwright? A printer? Help me out here!

5. The name of the character. (Caveat: The name will have to be an Old-Testament or Hebrew name in order to conform to the rest of the series. If your name is a Hebrew name, just count yourself as extra lucky if we can use it.)

6. Other ideas? I am open to suggestions for minor additions to character background, etc.

Just to be clear, I reserve the right to edit and modify whatever name, occupation, description, background, or traits the winner suggests, but if the winner truly gets a feel for the tone and spirit of the book, this could be a really cool opportunity for them. And I will mention their involvement in the acknowledgments! (That way they get to have their REAL name in the book too).

Now for the puzzle…

It is really quite simple. At the front of the book, “The Thorn”, there is an extensive glossary with names of all the characters in the book. Every single character ever mentioned is on the list. With the exception of one. One name is a name the careful reader will not recognize. It is a name of a character who will be in book two, but is never mentioned in “The Thorn”.

Read the book. Take notes. Figure out which name in the glossary is never mentioned. Then come to my website and fill out my mailing list form so you can get my quarterly newsletter. There will be an extra field labeled “Contest Entry Code”. Put the name of the character there when you submit. All correct entries will be tallied, then a random name will be drawn. I will notify the winner by email, and we will begin to create the character!

More of the prize…

In addition to being mentioned in the acknowledgements for book two, the winner will ALSO win a personalized copy of “Heaven’s Garden” when it is released, and their picture with me at a book signing (if the winner is able to attend).

What do you think? Excited?

One last note: Please don’t post the answer to this puzzle online where others can find it, or you will ruin it for everyone. You will also severely limit your own chances of winning the prize, because other folks who have not taken the time to solve the puzzle can then simply use your answer and enter the contest on the mailing list.

Savvy? (I love it when Jack Sparrow says that… since we are talking about Captain Jack, here is one of my favorite quotes from the movies: “Trust me on this. You can mistrust me less than you can mistrust him. Trust me.”)

My book won’t be available for a couple of weeks, so that gives me just enough time to get my mailing list ready on my website. I will let you know when it is ready to go! In the meantime, pre-orders are open for my first book, “The Thorn”, which you are going to need in order to play (and to make the contest lawyers happy, no purchase is necessary… go to the library if you would rather not purchase).

You may pre-order the book here: Valor Publishing Group

This contest will end when I draw for the winner on May 1st, 2010. Happy Hunting!

Did God punish Haiti?

Posted by: DaronFraley    in Spiritual Thoughts

Have you ever heard somebody say, “If God truly existed, he wouldn’t allow people to suffer”? Many times, this sentiment is expressed by those who have tasted of suffering in their life. Losing a loved one, living through extreme hardship, or experiencing severe disappointment has made them feel abandoned, or even punished. They have wondered, “WHY?”

They ask: Why do people suffer? What good does it do anyway? How can God allow it? Is he not merciful? If he truly loved us, wouldn’t he help?

They are desperate pleas. The sufferings we feel are sometimes so exquisite that we see nothing but the pain. And sometimes that pain makes us bitter. We even begin to think that our lot in life cannot be expressed in words, because surely, we are the only ones to have ever experienced such a tragedy.

From the New Testament, 1 Peter 4:12 — “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you.”

Every. Single. Person… WILL EXPERIENCE SUFFERING in this life. I have. You have. If we haven’t yet, we will. The types of suffering may be different. But we will all experience it.

Is there a reason for the suffering? Is it because God doesn’t love us? Is it because we are being punished? As human beings we need things to make sense. We need answers.

There has been a huge outcry recently about statements made by the TV Evangelist, Pat Robertson. He claimed on his show, The 700 Club, that the horrible earthquake in Haiti was because of a pact with the Devil, and is just one more example of a curse upon that land. Shepard Smith of Fox News called him out on it. I agree with Shepard.

Other folks looking for answers to the destruction have cited the extreme corruption in the Haitian government, reminding us that much of the aid in past days never made it to the citizens who needed it because of their greed.

Perhaps, then, we can say at least they deserved it? Certainly they were the wicked people who lost their lives in the earthquake. But what of the innocents who lost their lives? Are there survivors who suffer now through no fault of their own?

Let me take you somewhere else for a moment. Fast forward to events predicted by The Revelation of Saint John in the New Testament.

Revelation 8:18 “By these three was the third part of men killed…”

There are plenty of bible scholars who say that this means 1/3 of the entire population of earth. Calculated loosely, that is more than 2 billion souls. How big is the number 2 billion? That is 10,000 times more than the number of people who died in the horrible 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. More than 230,000 perished. With current totals and predictions by at least one news outlet, the death toll for the earthquake in Haiti could almost match it.

I am not trying to diminish the heart breaking tragedy of Haiti. Or the tsunami of 2004. I am trying to make a point about sheer numbers. Can you even imagine having a global disaster where 1/3 of the earth’s population is destroyed? It is terrible and frightening.

Tell me: What will be the state of mind for many people on the day in which that particular massive destruction takes place? Will God cease to exist for those who survive? Will there be those who will finally give up, saying, “God is dead, otherwise this would not have happened“?

Will all of those who die deserve it because they are counted among the wicked? What about the innocents? Will they all be spared?

I want to share my own personal belief with you on these matters. Whereas I am sure there were those who were in no way prepared to meet their God on Tuesday, January 12th, there were also many, many people who were blessed by that reunion. God loves His children. The poor who have struggled, the hungry, the oppressed–all have found rest in His arms. Even the most wicked men and women–those who were not following His commandments–experienced a taste of mercy by leaving this difficult existence, if nothing else by being prevented from sinning further.

As time goes on, there will be further tragedies. Both the wicked and the righteous will suffer in them. Why? Because God wants our hearts. He also wants us to be prepared for whatever may come. If we are obedient, and we love the Lord, does it really matter if we are called home to our Heavenly Father?

What matters is what we have become.

1 Peter 4:19 – Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Let us become like Christ. Like Him, let us aid the poor. Let us love our fellowman. Let us also repent of all our uncleanness. Then let us worship our God, and never turn our back on him, even in those times when we don’t readily see His loving hand directing our lives.

And then, if we are taken, we will still find ourselves in the loving embrace of a Father who will say: “Welcome home. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

That is the type of homecoming which I look forward to. May I live in such a way that I will be counted among those worthy of such a heavenly reception.

If you would like to donate to a charity in which 100% of the funds are used for aid to the people of Haiti (not a cent is used for administration or proselyting), please consider donating to the LDS Church Humanitarian Relief Efforts fund.

Soon to be armed with a pen and dangerous

Posted by: DaronFraley    in My Books

I am so completely stoked. My publisher, Valor Publishing Group, is da’ bomb.

How many publishers out there do Author Training?

Can those publishers even be counted on more than one hand?

What does an author get trained in, you ask?

Talk, Give, Make, Meet, Fix, Listen, Help, Look, Say, Answer, Write, Go, Read, Learn.

(OK, so those are code words. I have been advised I can’t tell you what we really did.)

HOLY SMOKING PRINTING PRESSES BATMAN!

Dudes… Dudettes… If you have a manuscript ready to go… if you have some guts… you owe it to yourself to check out Valor’s submission requirements.

I feel like I have joined the Rangers or Seals of the publishing world. I have never felt so cool in my life… until today.

One parting note:  As of this morning, Valor has my book ready for PRE-ORDERS!!!

Check it out:  http://www.valorpublishinggroup.com/Books/the-thorn.php

SOMEBODY PASS ME THE OXYGEN

I wasn’t sure what to call this post. Part of me finds it easy to justify my complete lack of attention to my blog. Another part of me insists that I shouldn’t let the other part of me which likes to come up with lame excuses get away with it. I am going to let the lamer win. At least for a moment.

My reasons:

1. The Holidays: I really enjoyed spending time with family through the Christmas season. We played games a lot, and ate way too much food. On New Year’s Eve, my son, son-in-law, and myself stayed up playing Settlers of Catan (with most of the expansion packs) until 5am. I regretted that later, but it was fun while I was awake.

2. A new addition: For the last 4 weeks I have been called Grandpa. My little granddaughter has been over almost every single day. I forgot what babies are like. They smell so good. They are fun to cuddle at nap time. One Sunday afternoon I fell asleep in the recliner with her resting in the crook of my arm. Slept for an hour. She never budged. Of course, my arm fell asleep, but it was worth it. Now that I think about it, this shouldn’t actually be a lame excuse. In fact, I am quite pleased with this one.

3. Twitter: I think social networking has become my bane. I am fascinated by it and repelled by it at the same time. Conflicting viewpoints abound. Some say an author should have twitter so fans can “connect”. Some say it is a waste of time. I am not yet sure. But my twitter activity certainly has outweighed my blogging.

4. Plotting: I did plot out the major arcs and characters for both book 2 and 3 in my series “The Chronicles of Gan”. I am very excited about what I came up with. But I am also quite worried about it too. I wonder if I can pull it off again. The first book was SO MUCH WORK. Yikes.

5. Preparing for signings: I have a ton of things going on right now in preparation for my book release. I have a training seminar I am going to on Friday and Saturday. I have been trying to figure out what I am going to do with my website. I have been wondering what to do about business cards and book marks and such. I have been trying to figure out if I can pull off a tour to promote my book since the publisher wants me to go for a longer time period than what I have vacation for… so unless I have a bunch of donations come in to cover the time-off-without-pay, I am not sure I can do the entire thing.

6. LDStorymakers Conference: I have been working with some friends who will be presenting with me at a “Website Design” class at the conference. We have a lot of work ahead of us. And we are not anywhere near ready.

7. Reading: I have been reading books in the late evening. Some books for enjoyment, other books because I promised the authors a review. And there are more to come. I have at least 3 more reviews I will be doing by March. A year ago if you would have told be I would be doing blurbs and reviews for books, I would have thought you were looney. Well, even today, I may still think you are looney, but that is beside the point.

8. Galleys: I did actually complete this one, but since it took a fair amount of my time, I am listing it. I need to take credit for getting at least one of these things completed!

9. The day job: This one pays the bills. Can’t get rid of this one yet. Somebody help me to sell 300,000 copies, and we’ll talk about this one again.

10. Google Reader: I think I have signed up to follow too many blogs. And that keeps me from maintaining my own. Or so goes the excuse.

11. FEAR:  I am nervous about what I have gotten myself into. I hear folks who are full-time authors talk about how hard it is to balance everything and get done what they need to get done in time for deadlines, etc. And I have a day job… AM I NUTS? What is wrong with me? I can’t believe that I am doing this, actually. I need to sleep. I need to work. I need to read. I need to write. I need to play games with my family. Gotta figure this one out or my family will disown me.

OK, so I admit that some of my problem… most of my problem… all of my problem… is that I have not yet figured out how to manage my time effectively. I wish I knew what the most important things were to be successful, then I could do those, and nothing else. Whew. This is going to be a very, very busy 6 months. I hope I make it through without going bonkers.

And for those of you who know James Dashner, don’t get on my case for not being able to count to ten. He does top-ten lists all the time, and can’t count either… and he used to be an ACCOUNTANT.  :P

I was not able to financially contribute to the startup of this publisher, but since I admire and respect the editor who started this project, I still wanted to help them out where I could. During the month of December, I helped to spread the word about their fund drive on twitter and facebook. I am here today to let folks know they are now open for business.

As of this week, they are accepting submissions for “multicultural fantasy and science fiction for children and young adults.”

You can check their submission guidelines here: http://www.tupublishing.com

My thanks to Darvell Hunt for the idea to do this today. He blogs over at http://ldswritersblogck.blogspot.com
