Michael Young, author of The Canticle Kingdom is holding a summer project for grades 5 – 12 that promises to be a great amount of fun for those who participate. The program includes music, art, reading, a scavenger hunt, and more. There are prizes for accomplishments! For more information, please see the full description of the program at the Canticle Quests website.

Here is a short description of the program:

With summer upon us, many are planning how to spend their summer vacation. All too often, young people opt for making the couch and TV their best friends during their free time.

Instead they could be expanding their minds and developing their talents, talents that can help them live a much more fulfilling life.

“Canticle Quests” is a summer program that helps young people develop themselves and share their work with others. Participants read novels from authors who have contributed to the project and then create works of art, writing, music, and more in order to earn points.

The points gain them entries into a final drawing with prizes provided by local authors and businesses. The best submitted works will also be showcased on the website for all to enjoy.

To put it in simplest terms:

WHO: All people going into 5th – 12th grade

WHAT: A summer reading/activity program with a chance to be recognized and win prizes.

WHERE: Open to everyone in the U.S. and Canada.

WHEN: June 7th – September 15th 2010 (You may sign up before the official start)

WHY: Because Summer is too precious to waste

There are no costs associated with the program at any time.

An Author’s Dream – The Pay It Forward Giveaway

   Posted by: DaronFraley    in Miscellany

WARNING: Don’t read this blog too fast. You might miss a really cool prize if you do…

There is an interesting contest going on between a bunch of authors which I thought was worthy of a quick post.

Check out what Karen Gowen is doing on her blog, here: http://karenjonesgowen.blogspot.com/2010/05/bmillers-pay-it-forward-best-contest.html

And this was inspired by B. Miller Fiction, here: http://bmillerfiction.blogspot.com/2010/05/pay-it-forward-giveaway.html

Here is another cool post by some Mooks: http://mooksinthemovies.blogspot.com/2010/05/paying-it-forward.html

I am quite impressed with this. Why? Because of the way B. Miller is offering to buy a book from an author. Do a review. Spread the word. Get local stores to carry the book. This is an author’s dream, to get readers to talk up their book and create buzz.

What is also interesting to me was the way other authors and writers have started to link to the contest. I am curious to see how far this spreads… There are quite a few sites already linking to these contests. And adding to them. If you click on all the links, it is going to take you some time to get through them all, I am sure.

I hope it goes viral. :)

I have been REALLY busy lately. I am in the middle of writing the sequel to The Thorn, and so my blogging time has been somewhat limited. SO… I need to keep my own addition to the contest SIMPLE.

1. Follow me on this very blog: 1 point
2. Follow me on twitter @DaronFraley : 1 point
3. Follow Tristi’s Blog: 1 point
4. And then follow @TristiPinkston on twitter: 1 point
5. Follow Michele’s Blog: 1 point
6. And then follow @Micheleabell on twitter: 1 point
7. Follow Kim’s Blog: 1 point
8. And then follow @kimberlyjob on twitter: 1 point
9. Comment on THIS post and let me know what you have done. If you are already a follower on any of these blogs or twitter IDs, you still get the point. Just let me know. There are 8 points possible. Each point gets one entry in the contest. Winner will be drawn randomly from all entries received.

Contest ends on JUNE 1, at MIDNIGHT.

The prize?

I have FOUR, (Yes, I said FOUR) author signed books which will be given away as a set. A book from myself, Tristi, Michele, and Kim. One winner. ALL FOUR BOOKS.

How is that for a prize? I will pay the shipping (U.S. only, please. I can’t afford international shipping). Of course, if the winner is outside the states, and they wish to pick up the shipping charges, I would be more than happy to send the books to them.

Here are the books:

The Thorn, by Daron D. Fraley (that’s me!)

My review of Secret Sisters, by Tristi Pinkston

My review of Summer in Paris, by Michele Ashman Bell

My review of I’ll Know You By Heart, by Kimberly Job

HAVE FUN! SPREAD THE WORD!

A week or so ago I did a twitter contest for a free signed copy of my book. And although I did have some participation (which I was very grateful for), the numbers of participants I was hoping for was nowhere near what I had envisioned. In fact, near the end of the contest I was scratching my head, wondering what I had done wrong.

I asked a twitter friend of mine (who I knew would have some good ideas), if he could give me some pointers. What I got from him was somewhat unexpected. Scott was very kind, but basically he told me that I had setup the contest improperly and had shot myself in the foot.

I want to thank Scott for opening my eyes in regard to doing online Facebook and Twitter contests. Let’s turn my lemons into lemonade. Perhaps by sharing Scott’s ideas I can help somebody else be successful with the next contest they do. I know that I’ll be doing things a little bit differently next time. Here’s Scott:

How to Gain Readership Using Book Contests (On Twitter and other Social Networks)

Readers, it seems, will do almost anything for a free book. Just last week, I wrote a lengthy blog post on one of my minor blogs about a topic I had no experience with, because that was the requirement for a chance at winning a never -heard-of-before book by a never-heard-of-before author. Books and contests can really make otherwise normal people behave really strangely! I know – that’s a pretty lofty assumption I’m making about people.

If you’re thinking of holding your own contest, whether it be a book contest or for something else, there are ways to succeed and ways to get less than ideal results. I’m going share some practical tips specifically on holding contests using Twitter, with the idea that you should be able to use a lot of the same concepts on other social media networks with similar results.

The best Twitter contests (like any contest) accomplish a few key things:

(a) offer something people really want,

(b) give the contest holder a real chance to gain a greater following,

(c) meet some defined business objective,

(d) don’t alienate or turn off potential entrants

Do they really want your book?

If you’re not a famous author (yet), there’s no instant recognition for your book. If you were to giveaway a book that people had heard of, you’d likely get a bigger response because there’s some established credibility there. Unfortunately, there’s usually a natural trade-off between what people want to win and what you want to give away. If you give away your own book, be prepared for less natural enthusiasm.

You can narrow the gap between what you’re giving and what people want by getting your content in front of them to experience. Consider adding a link on the contest page to some of your writing, so people can get a feel for your style and for what they might experience in your book. An entrant may not care for it ultimately, but at least you’ve given yourself a fighting chance by getting your writing in the spotlight.

Don’t defeat yourself with bad contest rules

The biggest drawback to Twitter contests is often the way the rules are set up. For example, if you require entrants to out-tweet eachother to win, you’ll get a mixed reaction. Half of the people will say “I’m not willing to do that for this book’ and the other half will say “I really want the book, and I know what it takes to win, but that means spamming everyone else’s Twitter feed with repeat tweets about this contest and my followers will get upset.” You’ll likely end up with people using spam accounts set on auto-tweet to win your contest (not what you had in mind). You need to make sure your rules are in line with your objectives for the contest.

Another way contests are often self-defeating is the opposite of the previous example in that they don’t require the entrant to do enough for the prize. If you’re using social media, you want people to gain interest in you, your book, your website, etc. while entering the contest. Too often, especially on Twitter, contest entrants aren’t even required to visit the host website or interact with the host. They may just have to retweet a message. If that’s the case, you’re just throwing your giveaway to the wind.

An “optimized” contest setup

If I were running a contest via Twitter, I would set it up this way:

1. Require people to follow you.

2. Set a limit to the number of tweets per person (either once per day or just once for the duration of the contest) so entrants don’t feel like winning is impossible, nor that their followers are going to be annoyed.

3. Set the end of the contest at least 2 weeks out. The big deal here is that you want these people to keep following you AFTER the contest is over, right? This is where most Twitter contests fail miserably. They get people to follow them, then don’t use that “window of opportunity” to engage the people in a way that they’ll stay followers once the contest is over. During your “window of opportunity” is when you put out your best content, best tweets, most one-on-one engagement, etc, because you have a captive audience that has to remain following you until the end in order to have a chance at winning. That’s where the setup of the contest helps you meet your business objective, which is to gain followers and get people interested in your book.

4. Don’t shy away from promotion! This may not come naturally for you, but it’s a big key to getting results from your contest. Promote the contest at least every day across several platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Promote the contest at different times of day with different messages depending on how close you’re getting to the end and how good the response has been.

If you have some clear goals for your contest, you have a better chance of running a contest in a way that meets those goals. You can learn by trial and error, but why not just get it right the first time?

Contest winner announcement

   Posted by: DaronFraley    in Miscellany

Earlier this week we had a contest to help drive entries to the Goodreads giveaway for “The Thorn”.

Although we didn’t hit 2000 entries for that contest, I still think 619 entries is respectable for a new book from an unknown author. Thank you all for your help! If you are a published author and you have never done a giveaway on Goodreads, check it out. I think it’s a great way to start to get name recognition, from what I can tell.

The winner of the “Tweet-it-up” contest, with the most number of tweets during the time frame is:  @heartensoul4u

Congrats Sharon!

Please send your mailing address to my email account which you will find at the bottom of my contact page (DARON link at the top of the page).

The winner of the Goodreads copy was Laurel Lammers of South Dakota (Laurel, if you read this post, I have your address already, and will be shipping your copy next week.) Congrats!

Thank you all for your participation.

Book Contest: Help Me Tweet It Up!

   Posted by: DaronFraley    in Miscellany

Tweeted blog contests are a double edged sword. If there is a contest out on a blog site, and those entries can be kept at a minimum, then those who have entered the contest obviously have a better chance of winning the prize. So why would anybody want to promote the contest with twitter? Isn’t it better to enter the contest, and then keep it secret? Makes sense to me.

I want to do an experiment… I have a contest going on over at Goodreads. It is for a free copy of my book (a giveaway), and so far there are 432 entries to win a single copy. I want that number to hit 2000. In fact, I would like it to go even higher than that. There are only 3 days and 13 hours left to enter the giveaway.

This blog contest is simple. Whoever tweets the most between now and the close of the Goodreads Givaway, WINS a signed copy of my book. See? If you tweet it up, AND join the giveaway, you actually have TWO chances to win a copy, and the chance you earn by tweeting will probably be much better odds than the giveaway.

I want you to help me tweet it up. Here is a sample tweet, with a shortened URL to this post:

Contest for free signed copy of book by @DaronFraley: http://bit.ly/bBDnAR #thethorn #giveaway #contest

You can say whatever you want in your tweet. But you must include a link to THIS BLOG POST so that folks can find the link for the goodreads giveaway, AND your tweet MUST include both my ID @DaronFraley and the hashtag #thethorn

This is how I will track how many tweets I see. If I don’t see it as a reply with #thethorn, it won’t count. And if it doesn’t have a link back to this blog post, it won’t count either.

Make me proud. Get creative. Be twitterific.

Now, go add yourself to the giveaway at Goodreads:  http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/show/3214-the-thorn

Storymakers Conference Contest for Seat at VIP Table

   Posted by: DaronFraley    in Miscellany

The time for the drawing has come…

This was a fun contest. I really got a kick out of the creative entries. In the end, I narrowed my choices down to four:

Andrea’s contacts, Carolyn’s puppet, Deborah’s Lamborghini, and Taffy’s brownies.

It was a tough race. It really was. I wanted those brownies. I also wanted the puppet. But in the end, I had to do a random drawing between the four entries. And the winner is:   DEBORAH!

Now I want to know what color that Lamborghini is…

Deborah, just in case you were only kidding about the sports car, whatever book(s) you deem worthy of parting with will still seal the deal.  But you weren’t kidding, right?   ;)

   Posted by: DaronFraley    in Miscellany

Contest #1 from my post a few days ago is now complete. Consulting random.org……  typing in the MIN and MAX number of entries……..

UPDATE:  Please be sure to leave me a link to your blog post when you comment! Thanks!

There really isn’t any secret to why I am doing Contest #1. My book release is only 7 days away. I want you to help me spread the word about my book. Simple, eh?

Contest #2, running until Midnight on Friday, April 30th:

The Prize: Be immortalized. Be a character in a book.

This contest was previously announced here: Secret-Name-Contest

My book is now available for pre-orders at the sidebar link to the right. Click on the book cover. By this coming Tuesday, March 16th, the book will be available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and other major retailers near you. You are going to need the book to participate in this contest. To enter, all you have to do is join my mail-list (also in my sidebar), and give the correct answer to the quiz. If you have already joined the mail list, but didn’t know the answer to the quiz, you are welcome to join again. I will remove the duplicate entries.

Here are the details:

One lucky contest winner will get to collaborate with me, the author, on a character in the second book of my series “The Chronicles of Gan”. Currently, that book is called “Heaven’s Garden”. The winner will be able to help me choose:

1. The description of a new character in “Heaven’s Garden”. The physical description of the character could be similar to the contest winner, if the winner desires.

2. The tribe to which the character belongs. Read “The Thorn” and you will know what the three choices are. Or are there four? ;)

3. Whether the character is a “good guy” or a “bad guy”.

4. The occupation of the character, if any. What will they be? A potter? An astronomer? A miller? A horse-trainer? A soldier? A mother? A gardener? A shipwright? A printer? Help me out here!

5. The name of the character. (Caveat: The name will have to be an Old-Testament or Hebrew name in order to conform to the rest of the series. If your name is a Hebrew name, just count yourself as extra lucky if we can use it.)

6. Other ideas? I am open to suggestions for minor additions to character background, etc.

Just to be clear, I reserve the right to edit and modify whatever name, occupation, description, background, or traits the winner suggests, but if the winner truly gets a feel for the tone and spirit of the book, this could be a really cool opportunity for them. And I will mention their involvement in the acknowledgments! (That way they get to have their REAL name in the book too).

Now for the puzzle…

It is really quite simple. At the front of the book, “The Thorn”, there is an extensive glossary with names of all the characters in the book. Every single character ever mentioned is on the list. With the exception of one. One name is a name the careful reader will not recognize. It is a name of a character who will be in book two, but is never mentioned in “The Thorn”.

Read the book. Take notes. Figure out which name in the glossary is never mentioned. Then come to my website and fill out my mailing list form so you can get my quarterly newsletter. There will be an extra field labeled “Contest Entry Code”. Put the name of the character there when you submit. All correct entries will be tallied, then a random name will be drawn. I will notify the winner by email, and we will begin to create the character!

More of the prize…

In addition to being mentioned in the acknowledgements for book two, the winner will ALSO win a personalized copy of “Heaven’s Garden” when it is released, and their picture with me at a book signing (if the winner is able to attend).

What do you think? Excited?

One last note: Please don’t post the answer to this puzzle online where others can find it, or you will ruin it for everyone. You will also severely limit your own chances of winning the prize, because other folks who have not taken the time to solve the puzzle can then simply use your answer and enter the contest on the mailing list.

Savvy? (I love it when Jack Sparrow says that… since we are talking about Captain Jack, here is one of my favorite quotes from the movies: “Trust me on this. You can mistrust me less than you can mistrust him. Trust me.”)

To make the contest lawyers happy, no purchase is necessary… go to the library if you would rather not purchase the book.

For the next week, you may pre-order the book at a discount here: Valor Publishing Group

The “SECRET NAME” contest will end when I draw for the winner on May 1st, 2010. Happy Hunting!

Storymakers Conference contest – I won a seat!

Posted by: DaronFraley    in My Writing Life

I am excited!

And you should be too, because I will have my wife in attendance at the conference. And I only won a single seat. Therefore . . . I have chosen to give my coveted winnings to a reader of my blog.

Here are the details of the contest prize:

http://ldstorymakerauthors.blogspot.com/2010/02/show-your-love-for-storymakers-contest.html

So…  what will you bid? Friend suggestions on facebook? A slew of tweets on twitter? Buying copies of my book for friends? Blogging about my awesomeness? Coming to my book launch party in two weeks and bringing 10 members of your reading club?

One of my twitter friends ( @DragonWrangler ) suggested a Lamborghini and a dragon. She didn’t specify the color or breed of the dragon, so that is still under review. Not acceptable if it would eat me.

Let’s get creative here! My book release is just two weeks away. Perhaps you can do something to help me spread the word. That would be worthy of a seat, don’t you think? And don’t forget, I have a mail list here on my website. In the right sidebar. You could somehow use that to your advantage, I am sure.

Let the bidding begin!

(Note: In order to win, you actually need to be attending the Storymaker conference. Details here:  http://www.ldstorymakers.com/conference_2010.php )

I look forward to your imaginative offers. *GRIN*

Of course, if you decide to do something like facebook friends, I will need to see the results first… otherwise, you are all talk. :)  The winner will be chosen by merit and selected with random.org if I like more than one idea. I will make my decision on March 17th, the day after my book launch.
